GERMAN POSTERS

“INFANTRIE.” Almost a universal message:  “Infantry, Queen of Battle.” In the German Army the highest form of warrior was the Infantryman.  The image of a young officer charging forward with his troops served to demonstrate that the Infantry led the way in battle.  The tank destruction badge on his sleeve dates this as being from the Spring of 1942 or later.

“FRONT HEISST EIN WILL, HEISST EIN ENTSCHLUSS, HEISST EIN ZIEL, UND HEISST EINE TAT.” – “At the Front is where the decision and goals are met, and that is a fact.”  Classic image of a German Infantry moving forward.  The constant message was that combat service is where one’s mettle was tested.

“Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer”…”One People, One Government, One Leader” was a constant theme of the Third Reich to rally the people to the cause. The depiction of Hitler with his troops on the battlefield reflects the results of believing inthe cause.  The scene image is especially interesting as it shows a wide variety of soldiers in unfrom and its noteworthy that there are several Luftwaffe Flak troops in the group.

Recruiting poster for the Waffen SS.  Simple and idealistic scene with an emphasis on the "SS" runes on the flag, helmet, collar tab and title.  Simple message of basically "You are eligible to join at 17 years old."

German Poster designed to win the hearts and minds of the French people after the fall of France in 1940.  A German soldier with smiling children and the message that refugees or the “abandoned” should trust the German soldiers to care for them.  This was part of the German campaign to lower apprehension of their occupation.
